God as a Field Interfacing the Spiritual World and Our Own Minds

In 2004 I appeared in the film What the Bleep Do We Know and spoke as a serious scientist lending my research background to the notion that we create our own reality. In 2006 I wrote Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d with my lifelong friend Nancy Marriott and in it I explored the further reaches of science and spirituality, another Bleep theme.
Most provocative of recent developments has been my “coming out” as a scientist to embrace what I experience as God. Some increasingly vocal hardcore atheists, who fail to make a very important distinction between spirituality and religion, are claiming their way of thinking should be the cornerstone of modern medicine and biology. True, the religion vs. science battle has waged for the past three centuries, but in my new book, I talk about a “new spirituality” that has nothing to do with the Church, but is grounded in more mystical roots. The God I embrace is within me and within us all, manifesting as our oneness, our love and our power. I dare to say that there is a bio-molecular basis for these qualities and experiences, and that when we are in these states of consciousness, we feel good.
Some misread my title because they didn’t see the play on “good/God.” If people want simply to feel good and not embrace their spirituality, they should go to other books. I’m more interested in the bigger picture that brings together human emotion, physical reality and a co-created universe. The heart of science is feminine. Many who can’t embrace a partnership with God are either looking through a dominantly male perspective, wanting objectivity, rationality and separation to rule the day or have rejected religion because of its association with family-induced emotional scarring (all potentially reversible!) in childhood and teen years. God is not rational, something to be proven beyond a doubt. God is closer to a feeling -- we sense a field that is mysterious, theoretical and undetectable by the scientific method I still passionately embrace. And we can use this field of infinite possibilities or God (as I prefer) to make our dreams come true in a dance totally consistant with the laws of science!

The Science of God

Deepak Chopra invited me to write a blog after we both got a good laugh on his radio show at the increasingly more vocal men (yeah, no women in this crowd!) who think all human experience can be reduced to the sequence of a strand of DNA with no place for a Higher Intelligence. As a practicing scientist of some renown and the author of Everything You Need to know to Feel Go(o)d, I am proud to be thinking about the scientific proof of God which involves the odds-defying occurrences of synchronicities. Richard Dawkins and his ilk of high level technicians, who are claiming the idea of God is unscientific are arrogant and appear to lack life experience as well as the imagination to ask big questions. They are only rebels against the dogma of religion and are uninformed about consciousness and spirituality.

In this debate about the existence of God it is argued (by a few scientists) that “Science”, is the correct belief system for discernment of knowledge, and reductive materialism is its guiding principal. I have been interested in the role of the emotions in the psychobiology of health and wellness for quite a few years now and have watched with some amusement over the past years as neuroscientists, using the tools of brain imaging, have published their pictures showing the loci of various emotions, like fear, anger, even spiritual consciousness, as residing in, or having generative origin in, rather specific brain areas. The conclusions derive from enhanced metabolic activity, blood flow or glucose utilization, associated with these regions. Reminds me of the claim that Peter Jennings exists inside the TV tube, or circuit board, or transistor, or electron- lets just keep following this reductionist path.

In fact, the expression of the emotions is more correctly viewed, at least to my thinking, as extending throughout the body-mind, in a continuum, not localized to a discrete site, certainly not the exclusive province of the brain. This is a more systems-like approach for regulating what “we” (not just our ‘body’) pays attention to. The better to live, love, and experience happiness. In this way “mind” is not simply an emanation of the serotinergic nerve processes of the midbrain and the body doesn't exist merely to carry the head around!

Emotions are clearly felt throughout the bodymind, and they integrate us with our fellow creatures, humans and animals. Biochemically they are identical across eons of evolution. Darwin himself commented on the shared expression of emotions in humans and animals in his book of that title, and emotions draw us into larger communities. It seems the essential question concerns the ability to choose, which is a product of our expanding capacity for self-reflection. You had to be at least a bony fish to experience anxiety, the ability to hold two or more conflicting ideas at one time. So decide already, and free yourself from fear and stress.

If mind, and its emanation “consciousness”, suffuse the body, and in fact extend beyond it, we may consider the role of our personal choices in the creation of our reality for it is the physicists we have informed us of the primacy of the observer.

I don’t see that this leads to a “reduced”, scientifically verified, “objective” reality.
Thought, and the emotions, are co-created, in a process that uniquely defines our bodyminds, and in fact our reality. And as all our consciousnesses intermingle, we, at least the sentient among us, are continually co-creating our reality, our evolutions, and our destinies. This is the fundamental free choice we are called upon to exercise. And as information seems to be transduced in “non-local”, ways, that is not bounded by space and time, “creation” seems instantaneous. By the way, where is information stored? In our books, genes, computers, etc?, and where does it go, when we die? Could this relentless expansion of the noosphere (Telihard), the filed of our consciousness, be the Living God? Not the old guy on the throne, on Judgement Day, but the field of all our collective hopes, emotions, and thoughts? I’m not making this up, I’m just interpreting what the laws of physics, such as we understand them today, seem to be telling us.

The Key to an Effective AIDS Vaccine Now

Not only is there none, but experts project a timeline to discover and prove success of FIFTEEN YEARS!!! This despite the genuine concern of the AIDS vaccine experts who cite the truly horrifying statistics: in some African countries, more than half of pregnant women are infected with the virus. Thousands of children are orphanned by AIDS every day. Seventy per cent of HIV infected people are women and children---things have changed in the twenty five years since AIDS first surfaced in the medical journals.

Some experts opine that a successful vaccine against HIV may not even be possible. Their reasons include the fact that the outer coat or "envelop" of the virus is constantly mutating and the fact that the part of the virus that binds to the receptor to get inside a cell stealthily stays hidden until just before binding, when the envelop undergoes an energetic, spasmadic shape-change. Knowing the part of the virus that binds--the receptor attachment sequence or "key"-- is ESSENTIAL to designing a successful vaccine that will elicit neutralizing antibodies.

We understand the key scientific reason why there is not yet a successful AIDS vaccine and none on the horizon. Despite the billions spent and the vast array of movie, athletic and rock stars who are raising more money to help, the experts form a monolith--there is only one idea being tested and sadly it is inaccurate. Now bear with me: The Wiley-Sodrowski Model, based mostly on an X-ray crystal structure of an artificial viral envelop with parts cut out, claims that no simple peptide sequence serves as the key, no short string of amino acids derived from the 600 amino acid long envelop protein. Instead there is a theory about "discontinuous epitopes", different parts of the envelop folding in upon itself to form a very big key that is too ill-defined to be of practical significance in producing a vaccine. This conclusion is based mostly upon the failure to find such a short peptide sequence that blocks infectivity after an intensive university-business-government collaborative search over 20 years ago. Sadly, despite the intense effort, the strategy was flawed:
Carving the 600 amino acids long envelp into 30 "20mers" didn't work for a number of reasons that peptide pharmacologists can easily understand (eg the pituitary gland's own morphine, beta-endorphin is 31 amino acids long, but most 1-20 pieces are inactive even though they contain the 1-5 ("enkephalin") highly active piece). This is because
sequence determines shape and final SHAPE is the key.

I am certain that we will make a fruitful connection soon to share our approach. We want to help. We want to work as a team and join the vast effort that has already done the groundwork for vaccine testing. Unlike virtually ALL vaccines undergoing testing right now which contain
the entire 600 amino acid viral envelop, the short peptides we have studied can be used to create a practical, effective vaccine for the developing world that would cost only pennies per person. Current test vaccines do NOT produce neutralizing antibodies, an essential requirement for full success since. Made of the entire envelop delivered by a viral vector, they are unlikely to eradicate AIDS, probably because there is too much irrelevant information or "static" being presented to the body's immune system.

I am grateful to God for giving us the leads and the opportunity to help to create a world without AIDS. It is only a matter of time to get enough data to convince the experts to let us help. (Sorry this entry is a bit more focussed and technical than is usual, but my ISH needed to speak on this matter)

Autism and Vaccines, Molecules of Emotion, Psychosomatic Wellness Healing Your Bodymind: Feeling Good after Dancing with Louise Hay

Autism & Vaccines, Molecules of Emotion Create Psychosomatic Wellness Healing Your Bodymind, Feeling Good after Wild Dancing with Wayne Dyer At Louise Hay’s 80th Birthday Bash

What was I thinking? Offering a rapidly changing blog to translate for readers the usually misleading daily media burpings about “scientific breakthroughs” and “new findings” about our health. Guided by readers suggestions yet! It’s already out of control with queries
about autism, the Big Untouchable. Dare to say that maybe just maybe the 70-some vaccines the average kid gets before starting school MIGHT just MIGHT be related to the huge increase in autism and you risk being hustled off to Scientific Siberia like Andy Wakefield. No, autism is not being diagnosed better. In the forties, it was so rare that only “born autistic” existed. The progressive late onset form that has increased 5-20 fold since the mumps-measles-rubella vaccine was introduced in the mid-80’s hardly existed before 1950 when people got just 1 or 2 vaccines. Mothers on autism websites write about this new form constantly: “My 18 month old kid was perfect, advanced even--- babbling in full sentences in two languages..then the night after his vaccine, he developed a fever and stopped talking completely over the next week. He’s never talked since or made eye contact and I don’t care what the experts say. I KNOW my kid got autism from the vaccine”.

What can one say scientifically? The Institute of Medicine’s Report that there is no proof of the vaccine/autism link is accurate---but there is CERTAINLY not enough good data to dismiss it. The fact that 98% of our memory T (immune) cells are found in our gut and that “attenuated” live viruses from vaccines live in cells there that can move into the brain suggest an alarmingly plausible mechanism for vaccine-induced neurodevelopmental disorder. To dismiss the possible connection with all the smoke around it is cavalier at best—unfortunately, the glorious victories of mass vaccination are the cornerstone of mainstream medicine. So don’t look to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease to start investigating this one. Besides they have their hands full protecting us from avian flu.

Let me move (for now) away from this depressing topic. The truth is I am also quite cranky from waking up in the middle of the night to check the Amazon ranking of my new book Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d. Richelle and the beautiful blond twenty-somethings at Hayhouse did such a fabulous job with publicity that it seems to be vibrating around the top-100 stratosphere. Speaking of which, I am also coming down from the astounding trip to Louise Hay’s mega-party. Did I tell you I grabbed Wayne Dyer and we rocked out pretty darn respectably? Did I tell you Louise danced vigorously and high kicked as the amazing band blasted “You’re Not Getting Older, You’re Getting Better”? The next night atop Louise’s San Diego penthouse, I was able to sleuth out Louise’s fitness regimen- -she actually happily shared it. I was able to get through it for one week before developing a horrible “cold". I need to listen to MY new relaxation/meditation/affirmation musical/CD not sold on Amazon, “Psychosomatic Wellness: Healing Your Bodymind”. I would NEVER mention some of the testimonials I’ve gotten—at the bare minimum I’ll claim the CD makes you feel good! Something that makes everyone feel good is the fact that 100% of the profits of HayHouse South Africa is donated to a South African charity that aids children orphaned by
AIDS.

Molecules of Emotion is 9 years old and people are still arguing about it via heated comments. The problem is (I explode when any one starts a sentence this way!) every one now knows me from the Bleep Movie and is mad that Molecules of Emotion is not more spiritual. Hay! I’m a scientist not a cult leader---I always go as far to the edge as I need to explain the data I’ve encountered UP TO THEN. My new book goes where I’d never imagined possible. Oh! And Amazon makes people buy Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind, a talking CD I made with the gifted Tami Simon over 8 years ago when I WAS too self-conscious to talk about Spirit in the old days. I am thinking about a new one with her...

My life has gotten pretty astounding lately. The chance to FINALLY FULLY manifest an HIV/AIDS treatment that leads quickly to an effective vaccine is here. There is no underground drug. There are no trials--- yet. And I am now focused lazer-like on this God-given mission as I explain in Everything You Need To Know to Feel Go(o)d. I will not be distracted by other possible uses of peptide T until it’s out there for HIV which infects 14,000 new people every day and kills 18,000.

Let me see if I can get this unexpurgurated version on the
Blog without some killjoy like Vanessa editing it to save me from myself. Blessings and joy to all! Candace

Real Science, Stem cells, Vitamin E, and MindBody Techniques

Practically every day, we read in the newspapers and hear on the television contradictory information about our health. Cancer rates are going up. Cancer rates are going down. These sensational and confusing reports occur where media, politics and real science meet. I plan to use this blog to invite people to comment regarding media reports about health issues that concern them. Each week I will choose one subject based on your input, and carefully evaluate the real science behind it (as opposed to the often hyped and/or confused media reports) and then I’ll write a SIMPLE blog on what I think is true.

I am a scientist, not a physician. Specifically I have been trained to understand and evaluate a scientific paper. What happens is that a paper is published in a scientific journal and then a press release prepared by the company or university is distributed to the media, each member of whom writes or talks a story if it sounds catchy. This three step process is what causes problems. Also, the mainstream media tends not to be familiar with what I’ve called new paradigm physiology—where our thought patterns are at least as important as our blood pressure.

Recently a company made an important discovery showing that all of the stem cells, which are sure to be useful for therapies in the future, can be created from one cell taken from the 8 cell stage of a human embryo. The non-scientist who wrote the press release said that the experiment had not destroyed a human embryo because they took only one cell. (It is known that the embryo can still survive and go on to grow flawlessly if one cell is removed at the 8 cell stage.) Unfortunately for the poor scientist and the poor company, the whole matter wound up under the glare of a Congressional investigation which got sidetracked by the misleading press release. (The scientist had in fact used all 8 cells from the embryo to get more data and the real medical promise of the discovery was lost.)

In another example about a year ago, a large study appeared to find that Vitamin E was actually damaging – that high doses seemed to cause illness and even death in folks with

heart conditions. I remember reading the news accounts of this study feeling intuitively that it made no sense. Before I found the time to check out the actual scientific publication, fate intervened and I heard a Director from the NIH Office of Complementary & Alternative Medicine lecture at Georgetown on this study. Actually, the study suffered from a serious logical flaw that trained scientists can easily find: it’s called post hoc analysis. AFTER the data was already in, dosage groups were chosen and compared. The highest dose of vitamin E showed more deaths! It’s pretty likely the self-selected, high dose group with the worst heart conditions to begin were desperately buying and using the most Vitamin E!. The sad thing is that the burst of publicity which followed probably caused many people to stop taking Vitamin E, despite a large number of good studies that shows that it can be helpful. It’s certainly safe or avocadoes would be illegal. The government scientist wondered who had actually funded this study – that’s important information that is not always available. In this case, I suspect it was a mainstream medical society that had a strong bias against alternative nutritional, supplemental, and mindbody techniques for heart disease and a strong bias towards surgery and drugs.

That’s all for now.

Candace Pert wrote:

Wow! Pat--this is the VERY FIRST "fan" letter of the new book!!! It makes me feel so great that it was helpful to a sophisticated therapist like you. The truth is there is so much out there that mainstream folks are unaware of…

Is the book out in Canada already? The publish date is Oct 1(??).

How would you feel if I posted this exchange on my new blog on the website (www.CandacePert.com)? Do I have your permission?

My Best,

Candace

From a beneficiary of your work

Dear Dr. Pert,

I have been a fan of yours ever since I first read Molecules of Emotion in 2004. At that time I don't think I fully understood the potential of your message, then I discovered What the Bleep, which I think is great as an introduction to the possibility of Quantum physics in everyday life. Now I follow your career and read everything of yours I can get my hands on!

I have just finished reading Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d. Thank you for your courage to speak your own truth as it meant so much to me as I travel my journey paying attention to creating the kind of healthy life I want to be living. Putting affirmations in place, as you suggested, as well as changing the message in my head about an allergic reaction I was having created healing almost overnight! I knew I could heal myself but lacked the confidence to step fully into my own power to heal myself until I read your book. The style of the book was so powerful for me I know it will be a re-read "must". I also really identified with what you were saying about worth, esteem in my selves and living with the expectation that I deserved great things in my life. I haven't yet figured out all the early trauma that I am carrying in my body and I will keep on keeping on figuring it out so I am living my life in the fullest possible way!

I have already recommended your book to family, friends and clients in my counseling psychology practice. I just wanted to write to you so that you will hear from an ordinary person about what a difference you are making in my life as I am sure you are to so many others! Please keep doing what you are doing...

Nameste,
